Understanding the Present
First Sunday in Advent
“When the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law that we might become children of God.” (Galatians 4:4,5
The Season of Advent (Latin for “coming”) focuses on God’s perfect timing by helping us prepare for Jesus coming. The roots of Advent go back all the way to the 400s in France and Italy. The length of Advent was fixed at four weeks by about 600 AD. There are three major themes to Advent:
- The coming of our Lord in his Word (the present)
- The coming of Jesus into flesh at Christmas (the past)
- And the coming of our Lord at the end of time. (the future)
Today – we focus on the Present – Jesus is coming! Now is the time to walk in the light!
May our Lord richly bless you as you prepare to greet Jesus this Christmas.
